Measuring impact: Causal evaluation and randomised controlled trials

Zoom
Deepen your understanding of causal evaluation methods and learn how to apply and interpret evidence from randomised controlled trials

Price: £249+ VAT

Understand what it takes to make stronger claims about impact

This two-part training course will help you deepen your understanding of causal evaluation methods, with a particular focus on randomised controlled trials (RCTs). It will include a mix of core theory and practical exercises.

Across two interactive online sessions, you will explore how different evaluation designs can provide causal or correlational evidence, gain practical insights into running RCTs and overcoming common challenges, and how to communicate results effectively.

Session 1: Understanding causal evaluation methods
8 December 2026 · 10:00–13:00 · Online

Explore the difference between causal and correlational relationships, and the essential role of the counterfactual in understanding causality – that is, what would have happened without the intervention.

We will introduce the rationale, design and practical considerations of common evaluation methods, including pre-post tests, quasi-experimental designs and RCTs. The session will look at how each method relates to correlation and causality, and how to identify opportunities to use them.

We will also explore how implementation and process evaluation can support causal impact evaluation.

Session 2: Understanding RCTs in practice
15 December 2026 · 10:00–13:00 · Online

Take a deeper dive into RCTs, including core theory, different RCT designs, and practical considerations based on real-world examples in higher education.

We will explore practical solutions to challenges including sample size, ethics and common logistical considerations such as dropout, practical tips for strengthening RCTs, and how best to communicate RCT evaluation results.

Participants will take part in a live RCT to demonstrate the method in action.

What you’ll learn

Note: Whilst this training will help you develop your understanding of RCTs, it will not give you the skills needed to run one independently.

Who is this training for?

This training is designed for practitioners and evaluators who have some familiarity with basic evaluation methods, such as theory of change and pre-post designs, and want to develop their evaluation skills and knowledge of causal methods, in particular RCTs.

It is best suited to:

Participants should already be familiar with basic evaluation principles and methods.
