Guidance and resources
The Interactive Technical Guides, hosted on GitHub, empower TASO staff, partners and the broader higher education sector with the skills to create engaging charts and enhance code readability and shareability.
Interactive Technical Guides: what’s inside?
- Data visualisation style guide: Offers clear, actionable guidelines for creating impactful charts with your preferred data visualisation tools, such as Excel, R, or Tableau.
- Coding good practice: Provides guidelines, tips and resources for making your code more accessible, shareable, and reliable.
- Data insights guide: A practical guide on using institutional data to address several key areas. It aims to help enable higher education providers to: identify equality gaps in higher education; identify where those equality gaps may be particularly acute, to enable effective design of post-entry student success activities; and help generate robust Type 3 (causal) evidence of the success of student support interventions. Note: The Data insights guide was previously known as the Data infrastructure guide. We updated the title in November 2025 to more accurately reflect its purpose of demonstrating how to use institutional data to identify equality gaps and for evaluation.
- Administrative data guide: A practical guide on using administrative datasets that are relevant to higher education research and policy. It aims to support users to understand each administrative dataset’s structure, access process and application to investigating inequalities in higher education.
We share all the code used to construct the guide on our GitHub page, where you can contribute and share your thoughts.
